Thermographic Inspection of Photovoltaic Systems

Thermographic Inspection of Photovoltaic Systems Using a Drone

Aerial thermographic inspections for photovoltaic systems

The efficient management of photovoltaic systems requires rapid, accurate and non-invasive checks. SkySight carries out thermographic inspections of photovoltaic systems using drones equipped with high-resolution optical and thermal sensors, collecting reliable data quickly and without interfering with the system’s operational activities.

What a drone-based thermographic inspection detects

Through aerial thermographic surveys, we promptly identify anomalies and faults that compromise the performance and safety of the photovoltaic system: hotspots, malfunctioning bypass diodes, faulty strings, damaged cells, abnormal connections, heat loss and, where present, damage attributable to hail events.

Many of these anomalies cannot be detected by a simple visual inspection: only by comparing RGB and IR thermal images can they be identified with certainty.

Comparison of RGB and IR thermal images of photovoltaic panels with a hidden thermal anomaly

A thermal anomaly is not always visible to the naked eye: in the IR image, warmer cells and bands are clearly visible, whereas they are invisible in the corresponding RGB image.

Technical reports compliant with the IEC TS 62446-3:2017 standard

The data collected is processed by our platform to provide a detailed technical assessment of the plant’s condition, supporting preventive maintenance and targeted interventions before critical issues lead to production losses or widespread failures. Our technical reports, featuring thermographic documentation and structured analyses, are designed for maintenance engineers, EPC contractors, plant operators and asset managers and can also serve as a useful documentary basis for insurance purposes, for example when assessing damage caused by adverse weather events.

Efficiency, operational continuity, fewer plant shutdowns

A solution designed to improve energy efficiency, reduce plant shutdowns and ensure operational continuity in industrial, commercial and utility-scale settings.
